Vertical Urbanism, 2024 Issue II

The resounding theme of the second issue of Vertical Urbanism is “the more dynamic the density, the better.” It synthesizes visions that have informed the central concept for decades, including John Portman’s soaring hotel atria forming a “vertical boulevard.” A contemporary take on vertical urbanism, using both interior drama and inviting exterior transparency, is found at Duan Family Center for Computing and Data Sciences. Rising boldly over the Charles River, its cantilevered forms and interconnected neighborhoods reimagine the modern campus as a vertical, collaborative environment. Emergent technologies and practices come to roost in the “Regenerative Tree” prototype tower, which, by blending timber construction, biomimicry, and adaptable design, calculates a 40% reduction in carbon emissions across its lifecycle. Meanwhile, thoughtful contributions from the City Advocacy Forum (CAF) examine dynamic density at the urban scale.
