Skyscraper construction is advancing at a dizzying pace—nearly 80 of the world’s tallest buildings have been completed in the past decade alone. These monolithic structures have come to represent the enormous strides of human development over the past century—a product of humankind’s innate desire to reach new heights, physically and metaphorically—and are the subject of a sometimes obsessive worldwide following. However, the tall building—and cities—are now starting to change in response to the considerable challenges of our time: massive population growth and rapid urbanization, unprecedented changes to the climate as a consequence of greenhouse gas emissions, and mounting social and public health issues. Our technological know-how and spirit of innovation will need to rise to meet these new challenges.
At 340 pages, The World’s 118 Tallest Buildings showcases the best examples of megatall buildings either completed or slated for completion by the end of 2023. In this beautiful new edition, you’ll discover a thorough collection of informative and visually engaging profiles of buildings that are altering skylines and incorporating innovations such as horizontal connections, sky gardens, and social spaces at height. Features include:
The World’s 118 Tallest Buildings is a continuation of the highly acclaimed “100 Tallest” series produced by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). This edition profiles the 118 world’s tallest buildings, in recognition of the completion of the 679-meter Merdeka118 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is not only the second-tallest structure mankind has ever built, but also the tallest building to be completed in the past dozen or so years, since Burj Khalifa. Since the last issue of the "100 Tallest" series was published in 2015, 57 of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers have been pushed out by this next generation of memorable towers. A staggering 65% of all buildings in this latest edition are thus new—a testament to the rapid growth in tall building development!
CTBUH is the world’s leading resource for information on the inception, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings and future cities. CTBUH has also developed the international standards for measuring tall building height and is recognized as the arbiter for bestowing such designations as “The World’s Tallest Building.”
