The recently completed Qingdao Greentown complex features a 74-story mixed-use tower, which used standard techniques to minimize the core footprint and maximize floor space, including skylobbies transferring between express and local elevators. The second portion of this case study looks at redesigning the core with two technologies developed by TKE, TWIN and MULTI, in which more than one elevator can share a single hoistway and the elevators themselves can move horizontally between hoistways. The proposed intervention would have increased the available area by more than two floors. Practitioners can consider such interventions as more sophisticated elevator systems come onto the market.
